Grand Teton National Park was a challenging feat that took decades to establish. These lands, lakes and historical features were originally set aside by Congress in 1929 to protect the Teton Range and its glorious features.

In 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared more land in the valley to create Jackson Hole National Monument. In 1950, John D. Rockefeller donated his land near the park, and along with the new acreage and the monument's combining, this effort culminated into what we now know as Grand Teton National Park.

The Rise in Popularity of This WY Treasure

After the conclusion of World War II, more individuals owned cars and were eager to explore America. However, people took shorter vacations, only spending a day or two at locations before moving on. With this in mind, park authorities developed motels and auto camps for RVs and van travelers.

Small cabins were also built near the main parking area, allowing visitors to have a cozy night’s stay and easy access to Teton’s primary attractions. John D. Rockefeller also developed an array of lodging that included rustic cabins, a stately lodge on a bluff and an elegant lodge overseeing Jenny Lake.

As visitation increased, the park expanded visitor services to better meet the needs of guests. In 1966, the park was gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary. This brought about new visitors centers at Moose and Colter Bay. To this day, these centers offer information and ranger-led activities in what is known as the “Mission 66” program.

Adventure has been drawing people to this area for hundreds of years, while natives mostly used the area for hunting big game for sustenance. These lands are teeming with many species of plants, animals and birds.

Many come here to summit the Grand Teton Range, with the first documented summit taking place in 1898. Many others have taken on the challenge since that time, and there are almost 100 routes that lead to the summit. There are several guides and tour companies that can assist with the journey to the top.
